Sentence structure: Past simple

The tense for finished actions in the past.

Alparslan builds a bridge with colorful blocks while Dobi watches. Bring the pieces together

In this chapter

  • When do we use it?

For finished actions in the past; we usually know when they happened (yesterday, last week). Regular verbs add -ed (play → played); irregular verbs have their own V2 (past form): go → went.

  • Past simple

    yesterday / last week

Pattern: Subject + V2 (-ed or irregular)

Example: We visited our grandparents last weekend.

Example: She found a little kitten yesterday.

  • Formula

Positive: She found a kitten. · Negative: She didn't find a kitten. · Question: Did she find a kitten? · Short answer: Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.

  • Color-coded examples

Example: We played board games last night.

Example: Ece went to the library on Monday.

  • Turkish equivalents

Example: I rode my bike yesterday.

Example: We went to Bodrum last summer.

  • Tip

Most common mistake: using V2 after did. Not “Did you saw?” but Did you see? did shows the past, so the verb stays in its base form.
