Patterns
Verb + person + to: Mom asked me to set the table. · make / let + person + base: Our teacher let us leave early. · Causative: have it done: We had our car washed.
Person + to
want + person + to. “I want that you meet…” is wrong.
Example: I want you to meet my friend.
Example: The coach told us to drink water.
make / let: no to
make + person + base verb. Turkish does this with an ending: gül-dür-dü.
Example: The movie made me laugh.
Example: My parents let me stay up late on Saturdays.
Meaning changes: -ing or to?
stop + -ing = quit that activity.
Example: He stopped talking.
Example: He stopped to talk.
Causative: have / get + thing + V3
I didn't cut it myself; a hairdresser did. Turkish uses the ending -tir for this.
Example: I had my hair cut yesterday.
Example: We are getting our kitchen painted.
Tip
No to after make and let: made me laugh, let us go. But in the passive, make takes to: I was made to wait.
