Geçmişte yetenek: could / couldn't / was able to

Kurallar

• Kural 1: could + yalın fiil

  could'dan sonra fiil her zaman yalın hâldedir ve could hiçbir özneyle değişmez.

  Kalıp: özne + could + yalın fiil

  Örnek: She could read at four. (Dört yaşında okuyabiliyordu.)

  Örnek: They could hear the birds. (Kuşları duyabiliyorlardı.)

• Kural 2: couldn't (could not)

  Geçmişte bir şeyi yapamadığımızı couldn't ile söyleriz. didn't could diye bir yapı yoktur!

  Kalıp: özne + couldn't + yalın fiil

  Örnek: I couldn't open the jar. (Kavanozu açamadım.)

  Örnek: We couldn't go out because of the rain. (Yağmur yüzünden dışarı çıkamadık.)

• Kural 3: Soru ve kısa cevap

  Soruda Could başa gelir. Kısa cevap: Yes, I could. / No, I couldn't.

  Kalıp: Could + özne + yalın fiil?

  Örnek: Could you swim at six? – Yes, I could. (Altı yaşında yüzebiliyor muydun? – Evet.)

  Örnek: Could he see the board? – No, he couldn't. (Tahtayı görebiliyor muydu? – Hayır.)

• Kural 4: was / were able to

  Belirli bir durumda bir şeyi başarabildiğimizi anlatmak için was / were able to kullanırız. Olumlu cümlede tek bir başarıyı anlatırken genelde could kullanmayız (see, hear gibi fiiller hariç). Olumsuzda ise couldn't her zaman olur.

  Kalıp: I / he / she / it was able to · you / we / they were able to

  Örnek: The river was deep, but we were able to cross it. (Nehir derindi ama karşıya geçebildik.)

  Örnek: She was able to climb to the top. (Tepeye kadar tırmanabildi.)

Sık yapılan hatalar

• I could swam. → I could swim.

  could'dan sonra fiil yalın olur.

• She coulds dance. → She could dance.

  could asla -s almaz.

• We were able open it. → We were able to open it.

  able'dan sonra to gelir.
