İkili bağlaçlar: both … and / either … or / neither … nor

Kurallar

• Kural 1: both … and = hem … hem de

  İki şeyin ikisi de doğruysa. Özne olarak kullanınca fiil çoğul olur.

  Kalıp: both A and B

  Örnek: Both Elif and Aylin are good at chess. (Hem Elif hem de Aylin satrançta iyi.)

  Örnek: I like both cats and dogs. (Hem kedileri hem de köpekleri severim.)

• Kural 2: either … or = ya … ya da

  İki seçenekten biri. Genelde bir seçim ya da tahmin anlatır.

  Kalıp: either A or B

  Örnek: We can either play soccer or ride our bikes. (Ya futbol oynayabiliriz ya da bisiklete binebiliriz.)

  Örnek: The keys are either in my bag or on the table. (Anahtarlar ya çantamda ya da masanın üstünde.)

• Kural 3: neither … nor = ne … ne de

  İki şeyin hiçbiri değil. Bu kalıp zaten olumsuzdur, bu yüzden fiile not eklemeyiz. either … or ve neither … nor ile fiil en yakın özneye uyar: Neither Tom nor his friends like it.

  Kalıp: neither A nor B + olumlu fiil

  Örnek: Neither Tom nor Sam likes broccoli. (Ne Tom ne de Sam brokoli sever.)

  Örnek: She can neither sing nor dance. (Ne şarkı söyleyebilir ne de dans edebilir.)

• Kural 4: both of / either of / neither of

  us, them, my friends gibi kelimelerden önce of kullanırız. Neither of genelde tekil fiil alır. Cümlede zaten not varsa neither değil either kullanırız: I don't like either of them.

  Örnek: Both of them are my cousins. (İkisi de kuzenim.)

  Örnek: Neither of us was tired. (İkimiz de yorgun değildik.)

Sık yapılan hatalar

• Both Ali or Can came. → Both Ali and Can came.

  both her zaman and ile.

• Neither my mom nor my dad doesn't drink tea. → Neither my mom nor my dad drinks tea.

  Çifte olumsuz olmaz; fiil olumlu kalır.

• Either you come nor you stay. → Either you come or you stay.

  either → or, neither → nor.
