Kurallar

• Kural 1: be able to = can

  Şimdiki zamanda am / is / are able to + yalın fiil, can ile aynı anlamı taşır. Günlük konuşmada şimdiki zamanda daha çok can kullanılır; be able to asıl işini diğer zamanlarda görür.

  Kalıp: özne + am / is / are + able to + yalın fiil

  Örnek: My sister is able to read long books. (Kız kardeşim uzun kitaplar okuyabiliyor.)

  Örnek: Dolphins are able to jump very high. (Yunuslar çok yükseğe zıplayabilir.)

• Kural 2: Gelecek → will be able to

  can'in gelecek hâli yoktur. ~~will can~~ asla denmez; will be able to deriz. Olumsuzu won't be able to, sorusu Will + özne + be able to…?

  Kalıp: will / won't + be able to + yalın fiil

  Örnek: One day we will be able to visit the moon. (Bir gün Ay'ı ziyaret edebileceğiz.)

  Örnek: I won't be able to come on Friday. (Cuma gelemeyeceğim.)

• Kural 3: Present perfect → have / has been able to

  Geçmişte başlayıp hâlâ süren bir yetenek ya da şimdiye kadar başarılan bir şey için have / has been able to kullanırız. since, for, yet, never, so far ile sık görülür. ~~have could~~ yanlış!

  Kalıp: have / has + been able to + yalın fiil

  Örnek: She has been able to ride a bike since she was five. (Beş yaşından beri bisiklet sürebiliyor.)

  Örnek: I haven't been able to finish my book yet. (Kitabımı henüz bitiremedim.)

• Kural 4: to'dan ve modallardan sonra

  want, hope, would like, need gibi fiillerden sonra to be able to gelir. might, should, must gibi modallardan sonra be able to. enjoy, imagine ya da bir edattan (about, without) sonra being able to kullanılır.

  Kalıp: want to be able to · should be able to · enjoy being able to

  Örnek: I'd like to be able to play the violin. (Keman çalabilmek isterdim.)

  Örnek: You should be able to see the lake from here. (Buradan gölü görebiliyor olman lazım.)

• Kural 5: Geçmiş → was / were able to

  could geçmişteki genel yetenektir: When I was five, I could swim. Ama tek bir olayda bir şeyi başardığımızı olumlu cümlede söylerken could değil was / were able to (ya da managed to) kullanırız. Olumsuzda ikisi de olur: I couldn't / wasn't able to find it.

  Kalıp: was / were able to = tek bir olayda başardı

  Örnek: The jar was tight, but Dad was able to open it. (Kavanoz sıkıydı ama babam açabildi.)

  Örnek: We were able to catch the last bus. (Son otobüse yetişebildik.)

Sık yapılan hatalar

• I will can come tomorrow. → I will be able to come tomorrow.

  İki modal (will + can) yan yana gelmez.

• I want to can dance. → I want to be able to dance.

  can'in to'lu hâli yoktur.

• He has could swim for years. → He has been able to swim for years.

  can / could'un V3'ü yoktur; been able to kullanılır.
